BACKGROUND TO RESET
Facework’s refugee training work was initially funded by Lewisham Council who sponsored two Ukraine refugees with Facework for a 12 month placement back in 2023. Islington Council has now joined the partnership and in 2024 placed 2 refugees with Facework for a 3-month internship so they could shadow Facework staff and be mentored to grow their training and project management skills so eventually they can be equipped to train other refugees in North London. In January they will help us co-design a more formal 12 week accredited training programme which we will open to others.
The wider policy context
As part of the launch of the GLA No Wrong Door accelerator programme, The Young Foundation was commissioned to undertake research specifically looking at the needs Londoners faced in a post-pandemic world. The report consulted over 250 individuals, employability organisations and those currently facing real barriers to employment and the recommendations are summarised in the following diagram which has informed our thinking:
RESET IS ALL ABOUT:
* COLLABORATION -We see collaboration with refugees as key to offering tailored support to and reach economically inactive Londoners.
* CONNECTIONS TO IMPROVE JOB OPPORTUNITIES- Refugees can reach the parts others can’t in their own language and through their networks.
* HOLISTIC. We integrate mental health support, self-employment and social integration with local volunteers into our offering.
* PARTNERSHIP -This project strengthens the work of Local Authorities and the Central London Forward Integration Hub
